Extreme Mountaineering

Just come across this great video of Ueli Steck climbing the amazing North Face of the Eiger in a record time of 2 hours and 47 minutes. From memory of my visit to the region a few years back the train takes a good while longer than this!

The Top of Europe, or Jungfrau Mountain Railway, takes visitors from Interlaken, Grindelwald, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen up to the highest railway station in Europe (some 3454m or 11333ft), where visitors can ski and snowboard all year round. On its route up through the tunnel the train stops and visitors get a change to look out of windows cut into the Eiger, at the North Face of the Eiger. See picture - Vertical is the word that comes to mind!

The railway, and the associated experience at the top, are highly recommended. Amazing views, great restaurants, ice sculptures, skiiing, snow boarding, snow tubing, zip wires, hiking and more to enjoy all year round. Remember your coat!

Of course YouGoDo has a wealth of great climbing activities and experiences from all around the world, including many in Switzerland. On both rock and ice!

For those who would enjoy just looking at the Eiger, the Bernese Oberland Region is stunning, and the pretty swiss village of Grindelwald is a superb place to admire the mountain from. Its one of life's spectacles which photo's never seem to do justice!

And as well as the winter sports, for which the region is famous, there are huge amounts of great and unusual things to do in Switzerland. Things like cowpat golf, the first flyer (a huge 4 side by side zip wire run near Grindelwald), the
Pintenfritz (the worlds longest sledge run), Trotti Biking (big adult and child sized scooters for downhill runs) and much more. Try this link for all of these things to do in Switzerland, with information, weather and stunning photos of the country.

And if you are planing to climb the eiger the time to beat is currently 2 hours 47 minutes ;-)
