Puerto Banus verses Portofino

Spain verses Italy - which has the best port! Actually that is probably too big a claim as I am simply comparing one marina from each country!

I really enjoy an hour or so walking around big marina, people watching, enjoying the sights of the superyachts, mega cars and gaining an insight into the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

I live about an hours drive from Puerto Banus near Marbella in Spain, and often go along for a walk around the port.

This year on a family holiday in Italy we also included a visit to Portofino near Genova (a place with quite a port / marina itself). Being a motorsports enthusiast, and having read Eddie Irvine's book, during which he praises the joys of Portofino on many occasions (he used to have his yacht moored there - maybe he still does!) I have always wanted to visit, so along we went.

So what were my conclusions?

Which is best - Italy's Portofino or Spain's Puerto Banus?

Read on... You may need to click the comparison table below to see the full details of my findings!

I am now going to do what I always hate in a comparison test and sit on the wall and say there is no clear winner!

Sorry - I guess it depends on whats you are looking for in a Marina. If you are looking for 'Bling' then I beleive Marbella's Puerto Banus is the winner - its numerous flash cars, top designer shops and overall size gives it the win for me on this basis. But this has it's down side, the 'bling' attracts the crowds of British stag and hen nights which attracts the seedy bars and whores, which in turn make Puerto Banus a bit of a dive on a night, once behind the front row.

If you are looking for a very classy and picturesque marina then Portofino is the winner. A beautiful smaller marina.

And I guess I should finally add that, due to its locality, I have visited Puerto Banus on many occasions, at all times of the year, and day and night. I have only spent a total of 5 hours in Portofino so there may be sides to Portofino that I have missed. Please correct me if I am wrong.

And if you are going to visit either - here a few ideas for things to do in Portofino, and things to do in Marbella

Choices choices....
